Germany’s Alexander Zverev heaped praise on Andy Murray after beating the Scot 6-4, 7-6 (7/4) at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells.

It was Zverev’s first career ATP win over Murray, having lost his previous two encounters.

Murray led by a break in both sets but losing serve four times in the match proved costly.

The victory means Zverev now boasts wins over all of Murray, Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal.

“He’s the only one of the Big Four that I hadn’t beaten yet, so I’m happy that I’ve done it today,” Zverev said after his win.

“I always stayed in the match, even though I was down a break in both sets. I always knew I had a chance. Especially the second set I think was an extremely high level from both of us. It could have gone both ways.

“Obviously it was a fantastic match. I thought Andy played extremely well, maybe as well as he’s played since the (hip) surgery. I hope he continues playing the same way, because tennis did miss him for a long time and it’s good to have him back.”

Third-seeded Zverev moves on to play Gael Monfils of France who rolled over hard-hitting South African Kevin Anderson 7-5, 6-2.

“I’m disappointed because I obviously want to be winning these matches,” Murray told reporters. “I haven’t in the last few months. Something needs to change.”
