Murray could face Spanish teenager Carlos Alcaraz in the second round and world No 4 Alexander Zverev in the third round.
Murray is currently ranked No 121 on the ATP rankings and had to rely on a wild card to get into the ATP Masters 1000 event.
He starts his campaign against 51st-ranked Frenchman Adrian Mannarino.
If the Scot progresses, he will face 18-year-old Alcaraz, who upset world No 3 Stefanos Tsitsipas at the US Open.
Zverev potentially awaits the winner of that match, with Italians – world No 7 Matteo Berrettini and world No 14 Jannik Sinner – also in Murray’s quarter of the draw.
Elsewhere, top seed and US Open champion, Daniil Medvedev, will open against either Mackenzie McDonald or James Duckworth.
He is then seeded to meet Filip Krajinovic in the third round and either Reilly Opelka or Grigor Dimitrov in the fourth round.
Second seed Stefanos Tsitsipas has Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime as a potential quarter-final opponent.
Dominic Thiem won the last Indian Wells Masters when he beat Roger Federer in the 2019 final. The event was not held last year due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Thiem and Federer are both absent due to wrist and knee injuries respectively.
