Andy Murray advanced to the second round of the ATP 250-level San Diego Open after a 6-3, 6-2 win over American lucky loser Denis Kudla.

Murray was initially scheduled to face Kei Nishikori in the first round, but the Japanese veteran pulled out injured shortly before the match.

Kudla, who had lost his final match in qualifying, then got into the main draw as a lucky loser.

Murray, down at No 109 in the world, had to rely on a wild card to get into the San Diego event.

He faces a tough second round duel against second seed Casper Ruud.

Elsewhere, Great Britain’s Cameron Norrie also advanced with a 6-2, 7-5 win over Germany’s Dominik Koepfer, while Dan Evans will also face a lucky loser, Kevin Anderson from South Africa, in his first round match.
