Former world number one Rafael Nadal has dropped out of the top five in the latest ATP rankings.

Nadal has shut down his season due to a foot injury and revealed over the weekend that he had gone under the knife.

The Spaniard played the Washington ATP 500-level event last month but lost his second match there to South Africa’s Lloyd Harris.

He then pulled out of the Toronto and Cincinnati Masters 1000 events before calling it quits for the remainder of the year.

Elsewhere in the rankings, Novak Djokovic comfortably retains the number one spot despite his defeat to No 2 Daniil Medvedev in the US Open final.

Medvedev’s predecessor as US Open champion, Dominic Thiem, is another to slide down the rankings, from No 6 to No 8, as a wrist injury prevented him defending his title in New York.

Spanish teenager Carlos Alcaraz, who became the youngest US Open men’s quarter-finalist in 58 years, jumped 17 places to 38, while Harris climbed 15 places to a career-high 31st spot after also reaching the last eight at Flushing Meadows.

Roger Federer, who is also out for the rest of the year with a knee injury, remains ninth.
